GP Utrecht – Tournament Report

Welcome to my tournament report from GP Utrecht.

As this is my first report I’m going to quickly layout my plans for tournament reports, I’ll start each by making a quick reference to something interesting that happened during the trip, like how when travelling to Utrecht the plane took off roughly, when it was meant to land due to the ground crew at Gatwick disappearing or how Stroop waffles are amazing.  I’ll then cover any Interesting rulings, people apparently find Precursor Golem confusing, and appeals that I’m involved with and the outcome of these. If any rulings are suitably confusing or people want me to go into more detail I will write about them in a following article.

In Utrecht the card I had the most rulings for was definitely Precursor Golem, followed by Spellskite with some Narcolepsy thrown in for good measure.

Q: If I target Precursor Golem with Profane Command giving it Fear and targeting my opponent with the lose life mode will I get copies for each Golem in play?

A: No, Precursor Golem states that the spell has to target only a single Golem by targeting the opponent this is not the case.

Q: If I target Precursor Golem with Grim Affliction how many creatures can I kill?

A: One, due to making the choice to proliferate on resolution you can give one -1/-1 counter to one, two -1/-1 counters to another and three to the last.

Q: If I target my opponents Equip ability for an equipment with Spellskite will it change the Target?

A: No, equip states it can only target a creature you control meaning it would not be a legal  target.

Q: I exiled my opponents Narcolepsy with Oblivion Ring. At the moment they control the only creature,

what happens if I destroy my Oblivion Ring?

A: As your opponent controls the only legal creature for Narcolepsy to Enchant when it comes back onto the battlefield they must choose to attach Narcolepsy to that creature.

Appeals

Situation: Andy casts Electrolyze targeting Natalie and one of her goblin tokens. Natalie removes the token from the battlefield, marks 1 damage and Andy draws a card. At this point it is realised that Andy doesn’t have Blue mana available.

Result:  When I was called to the table I ruled a Game Rule Violation and a back up to before the Electrolyze was cast. Natalie argues that due to Adam drawing a card this should be a Game Loss for Drawing Extra Cards and appeals. The appeals judge comes and explains due to the error previous to the card draw this can not be Drawing Extra Cards and upholds the ruling.

Situation: Adrian attacks with four creatures Nathan casts Raise the Alarm, then declares the soldier tokens as blockers, he blocks with another creature and then animates a Blinkmoth Nexus and blocks with it.  Adrian calls a judge thinking Nathan had missed his chance to animate the Blinkmoth Nexus.

Result: I ruled as Out of Order Sequencing due to Nathan performing this all as one block of actions, Adrian appeals. The appeals judge explains that as Nathan is the last player to have priority in before blockers are declared we allow them to perform actions slightly out of order as long as they haven’t had a chance to make a decision based on a reaction from the opponent and upholds the ruling.

Situation: Nadine activates the equip ability of an Equipment using a block of lands with a couple of bounce lands hidden within and passes the turn to Amy. At this point Steve ask’s Amy in French if Nadine had enough mana to activate the ability. Nadine calls a judge at this point.

Result: After talking to all parties involved I was happy that the only thing that was wrong was that Steve should have called a judge to handle the issue and talked in a language Nadine understood and ruled no infraction. Nadine appeals believing that this is Outside Assistance, the appeals judge talks with all players involved and explains that while Steve should have called a judge rather than saying anything pointing out if a player potentially made an illegal play is not Outside Assistance and upholds the ruling.

Readers challenge: Each article I’m going to post a rules question for you to answer in the comments, I will then post the correct answer in the next article.

You are playing a Modern Masters 2015 sealed deck event. Your opponent controls a Precursor Golem and it’s two Golem friends, you want to cast Repeal targeting one of the tokens. How many cards would you draw once the stack is empty and why?
